Server-wide lag reduction suggestions

Post by Grimtongue on Wed Aug 27, 2014 3:24 pm

I've been flying around the server (because powersuit is awesome!) and I've identified some of the primary culprits of both kinds of "lag"

Let's start with some clarification.  "Lag" can mean a drop in Ticks Per Second (TPS) or a drop in Frames Per Second (FPS). I'll address the main offenders seperately.

FPS offenders
The following structures caused a significant FPS drop on my gaming PC - if this is a problem for my machine, it is probably a game-ruining experience for many people. These things should not be in any public areas, such as shop world or spawn.
Tanks (openblocks)
-multiple connected tanks cause massive FPS drops, even when the volume inside is constant
Railcraft Tanks
-the way these tanks are rendered causes FPS drop on a per-tank basis (size doesn't seem to matter)
Entities (large numbers)
-large numbers of picture frames, and certain of the forge microblocks (unverified)
-mobs of any kind, in large numbers and especially in small areas
-many *different types* of items on the ground in one location

TPS offenders
The following things cause massive TPS drops, which has a negative impact on everyone on the server. These items should be restricted or banned.
Buildcraft Pump in the nether
-BC pumping the nether should be completely banned. Offenders should be force-fed rotten bananas.
-Enderthermic pumps exist specifically to prevent the TPS disaster that a BC pump creates.
-sell Enderthermic pumps in the admin shop for roughly the cost of a BC pump
THE MINING WORLD
-I'm sure that it seemed like a good idea at the time. Nobody wants an ugly world, but the mining world is an unnecessary TPS disaster.
-Suggestion: Completely remove the mining world.
-sell Ender Quarry in the admin shop. Encourage people to use this instead of BC quarry.
-Offer free/cheap exchanges from BCQ to EQ for those people who are currently using BC quarries.
CHUNK LOADERS
-disable all chunk loaders, except for the ChickenChunks loader
-use the admin tools to restrict chunk loading to a max radius of 7 and a max of one-per-player
Chunk loader tools:  ChickenBones Mods

The miner world isnt a tps disaster. It stays in daylight, no mobs spawn. No activity in that world at all. In fact I could even disable physics in that world all together.

I do not want mining machines in normal world for 2 reasons.

1. Ugly world, even the enderquarry. As it replaces everything with dirt, some mines a mountain or other biomes that dont have normal grass blocks just looks funky.

2. This is the most important reason altogether. I dont want some one mining out my house by mistake. There is no way to fix it. No plugin records block changes by these mods, so no way to fix it. A lot of the players live underground.

Something that I am sure will fix the lag issue, is remove all the failed mystcraft ages that i made. like 10+ worlds sitting there that might be loaded in memory.

i saw you said microblocks can cause fps lag, correct me if im wrong but i heard microblocks will cause rendering lag depended on how many sides a block has, so put a couple microblocks in there and instead of the normal 6 sides it would have more, causign fps drop

I only knew of the nether, Regular, and miner worlds being almost constantly loaded. I had no idea there were so many others, so I was blaming miner world for those problems.

If you want to reduce some lag don't use crystal chest because it renders the Items inside of it. if you have a bunch of them they will cause lag issues

Ender-Thermic Pumps

Post by Grimtongue on Sun Aug 31, 2014 6:26 pm

I replaced my BC-Pump oil rigs (pump, power supply, liquid ducts) with just an Ender-Thermic Pump and a Tesseract directly on top of it. It's less laggy, and loads one fewer chunk than the other setup did. I'm very satisfied with the E-T pump (it also works on water and lava).

I removed the extra mystcraft worlds, like 10 of them or more. Should help. Also something else to consider is that dynmap was also trying to render all those maps as well. Something else I need to work on is the dynmap config. I am only going to let it render for the nether, overworld, promised land, twilight forest. this should help as well!
